5 steps to prepare your home for winter

Dec 22, 2022
  1. Get a certified roof inspection: Look for any missing, damaged, or loose shingles and have them repaired or replaced as needed. You should also check for any damage or leaks around your chimney and vents. When frost or snow collects on your roof, the water will seep in around any penetrations that are not completely sealed and cause interior damage to your attic or home interior.
  2. Remove debris: Clear leaves and other debris from your roof, valley areas and gutters to prevent saturation, back up & overflow. When leaves and debris collect on your roof it can lead to leaks from water not being able to flow off of your roof properly. When water collects in areas it is not intended for, the water can seep under shingles or into roof penetrations causing leaks. Over time these leaks can cause issues ranging from minor damage to mold or the destruction of your property.
  3. Trim trees: Prune any overhanging branches to prevent them from breaking off and damaging your roof during winter storms. This is also important for the reasons listed above in our second tip. In the event that a tree branch breaks due to ice forming on the limbs you not only have to worry about the increased weight of the ice but also the water damage that will be caused if the branch creates damage through the roofing shingles.
  4. Insulate your attic: Proper insulation helps keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Make sure your attic is well insulated to prevent heat loss or ice dams (in certain regions). Proper insulation can also lead to savings in your electric bills! There are many types of insulation available so be sure to ask questions and do your homework when selecting the insulation that is right for you!
  5. Seal any gaps: Check for gaps around windows, doors, and other openings and seal them with caulk or weather stripping to prevent drafts. This will help minimize heat loss and save money on your electric bills as well!
